Harris County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 4,092,459, making it the most populous county in Texas and the third-most populous county in the United States. Its county seat is Houston, the largest city in Texas and fourth-largest city in the United States. The county was founded in 1836 and organized in 1837. It is named for John Richardson Harris, an early settler of the area. By the July 2016 Census Bureau estimate Harris County's population had grown to 4,589,928
John Richardson Harris, early Harris County settler and founder of Harrisburg, the son of John and Mary (Richardson) Harris, was born in Cayuga, New York, on October 22, 1790.
On May 7, 1813, he married Jane Birdsall. John and Jane Birdsall Harris settled near Waterloo, New York, where two sons, DeWitt Clinton and Lewis Birdsall Harris, were born. In 1819, they were living in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, where their daughter Mary Jane Harris Briscoe was born. A third son, John Birdsall Harris, was born in 1821.
At Ste. Genevieve, Harris met Moses Austin and decided to move to Texas. He came to Texas in his own vessel in 1824, and received title to 4,428 acres of land at the junction of Bray's and Buffalo Bayous in what is now Harris County. He boarded with William Scott while he built a house on the peninsula between the bayous and a store and warehouse on Buffalo Bayou.
In 1826, he employed Francis W. Johnson to lay out the town of Harrisburg. With his brother David Harris, John Harris established a second trading post at Bell's Landing on the Brazos River. Their sloops and schooners plied between Texas and New Orleans. One of these vessels, the Rights of Man, carried 84 bales of cotton to New Orleans in 1828.
Harris was building a steam sawmill-gristmill at Harrisburg in 1829, when he went to New Orleans to buy equipment and there contracted yellow fever. After his death on August 21, 1829, his sawmill and shipping enterprises were operated by his brothers David, Samuel, and William Plunkett Harris. His widow and son DeWitt moved to Texas in 1833; the other children came later.

If you've watched videos of people playing with squirrels on our site or YouTube, you understandably might now be thinking, "Hey, that looks like fun! Where can I buy a squirrel?" This article will explain how you can get all the cuddly squirrels you want for free.
First, before you jump in to getting your own squirrel, it's important to learn some basic facts.
Baby squirrels are remarkably willing to be raised by humans. It's amazing. For the first six months of their life, if you give them good care and love, they will happily accept you as their mama. They are enthusiastic fun loving little creatures, and you can experience many hours of joy with young squirrels.
As the babies come to maturity, the situation changes. Adult squirrels are like adult humans. They want to go off in to the world, live the life a million years of evolution have designed them to live, revel in their freedom, and engage in, um, baby making activities.
If an adult squirrel is denied the life they were designed to live, they become less cuddly, anxious, and maybe even a bit ornery. All the energy they would normally use in a natural life outdoors now gets applied to chewing on your furniture, electric cords, and maybe your fingers. Adult squirrels can not be house trained either.
If you take this approach, you'll find the vast majority of wildlife rehabbers will welcome you with open arms, and help you have the experience you want to have.
You don't have to dive in to raising baby squirrels until you're ready. As example, you might volunteer to baby sit baby squirrels for a few days when the rehabbers go out of town. You might volunteer to assist the rehabbers with their squirrels.
Once you're ready to have your own baby squirrels, you will have to spend some money on supplies. It's not real expensive, but especially the first time, you need to stock up on formula, syringes, nipples, cages and so on.
So, you've learned that baby squirrels make great pets, and adult squirrels do not. You've also learned that, if you do it right, you'll never have to buy a baby squirrel.

Galveston County was formally established under the Republic of Texas on May 15, 1838. The county was formed from territory taken from Harrisburg, Liberty, and Brazoria counties, with governmental organization taking place in 1839. The island and city of Galveston was by far the most important population center. The city of Galveston was the republic's largest city and its center of commerce and culture. Port Bolivar on the Bolivar Peninsula was a port of secondary importance. Other development in the area was initially mostly ranching interests and small farming communities. Texas soon joined the United States and Galveston's importance continued to grow as it came to dominate the worldwide cotton trade. As railroads between Galveston, Harrisburg, Houston and other towns were built during the 19th century, small communities grew up along the rail lines. Nevertheless, Galveston still dominated. At the end of the 19th century, a group of investors established Texas City directly across the West Bay from Galveston with the hope of making it a competing port city. The port began operations just before the start of the 20th century.
The 1900 Galveston Hurricane devastated the county killing an estimated 6000 people on the island alone and numerous others in the rest of the county. The Port of Galveston was closed for some time as rebuilding occurred. The Port of Texas City, however, was able to re-open almost immediately allowing shipping through Galveston County to continue largely unimpeded and proving the merit of the new port city.
Investors had long worried that the Texas coast was a dangerous place to establish major commercial operations because of the threat of hurricanes, and the 1900 disaster seemed to prove that. Though Galveston rebuilt its port and other major operations quickly, major investment moved inland, largely to Houston. Soon Houston and Texas City had outpaced Galveston as major ports.
The oil boom in Texas began in 1901 and soon pipelines and refineries were built in Texas City. Industrial growth blossomed, especially during World War II. Galveston's manufacturing sector, however, was more stagnant during the 20th century.
